CCSF Diego Rivera Theatre
San Francisco, CA
The project site, on north-south axis to the prominent Science Hill Building, is a reutilization of an existing parking lot. Its placement is nestled between the existing MUB classroom building and on secondary axis to the future STEM building. The RFP required meeting minimal program spaces and space adjacencies in coordination with a two-phase masterplan, which demanded Diego Rivera’s famous Pan American Unity Mural be relocated from old campus, to its SFMOMA tour, and before final placement in a conditioned, separate building. This gallery now intersects two major campus pedestrian paths while anchoring the high visible facade to major performance spaces. The nearby rehearsal rooms, tech hall, and main theater demarcate the remaining site corners with daylighting and state-of-the-art acoustic deign strategies. The merriment of concrete and glass materials with dramatic internal volumes and walkways reinforces the greater connection with campus and the performing arts.
